Several guards stood watch over the gates of Vesper during Ultima IV.

Hulking brutes of indeterminate gender, the Vesperian guards of the era appeared to be individuals of few words, and when spoken to, they would only bellow "Ug, me tough!" Should their interest in the Stranger be piqued, they might go so far as to inquire "Ug, thee tough?" although this question would do little to alter the course of conversation with them.[1]

- These monosyllabic hulks may be intended as a reference to Ultima II, in which all fighters throughout the game would recite the same phrase, "Ug, me tough!"[2]
- Even though guards in Ultima IV are often assumed to be human, the transcript gives their pronoun as “it”, indicating they are something else.
