The eternal Flames of the Principles are besides the Book of Truth, the Candle of Love and the Bell of Courage, the substantial signs of the three principles in Britannia. Each of these flames is kept in the stronghold representing the principle.

The Three Flames[edit]

The Flame of Truth[edit]

The Flame of Truth

The Flame of Truth is located in the Lycaeum on Verity Isle east of the Britannian mainland.

In Ultima V, the keeper of the flame was Sir Sean, who gave the Avatar hints on how to reach Stonegate, the fortress of the Shadowlords. After finding the Shard of Falsehood in the Underworld beneath Deceit, the Avatar summoned the Shadowlord Faulinei. Just when he hovered over the flame, the shard was cast into the fire, and the Shadowlord was destroyed forever. The flame also was found in the Lycaeum during Ultima VI, but no designated keeper was named at the time.

The Flame of Truth was not seen in Ultima VII.

The Flame of Love[edit]

The Flame of Love

The Flame of Love is located in Empath Abbey in the forests of north-western Britannia.

In Ultima V, the keeper of the flame was Barbra, who gave the Avatar some understanding about what had happened to Lord British during his expedition into the Underworld. After finding the Shard of Hatred in the Underworld beneath Wrong and Covetous, the Avatar summoned the Shadowlord Astaroth. Just when he hovered over the flame, the shard was cast into the fire and the Shadowlord was destroyed. The flame also was found in Empath Abbey during Ultima VI, but no designated keeper was named at the time.

The Flame of Love did not appear in Ultima VII.

The Flame of Courage[edit]

The Flame of Courage

The Flame of Courage is located in Serpent's Hold on the Isle of Deeds in the southern seas of Britannia.

In Ultima V, the keeper of the flame was Gardner, who gave the Avatar a hint about where to find the Shard of Cowardice in the Underworld. After finding the Shard of Cowardice in the Underworld beneath Hythloth, the Avatar summoned the Shadowlord Nosfentor. Just when she hovered over the flame, the shard was cast into the fire, and the Shadowlord was destroyed once and for all. The keeper of the flame in Ultima VI was Lady Tessa, as she told the Avatar when talking with her.

The Flame of Courage was not seen in Ultima VII.

Lore[edit]

In a grand chamber on the Lycaeum's third floor, the Eternal Flame of Truth shines through day and night, tended faithfully by Lord Sean.

The Eternal Flame of Love shines from a northern balcony on the second floor.

The Eternal Flame of Courage burns in a secluded basement chamber, monument to the brave acts of the Order's knights through the ages. Its valiant keepers are strong in the virtue of Sacrifice, since they almost always suffer chronic carbon monoxide poisoning due to lack of proper ventilation.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Keyring Mod, the fact of the flames for some reason are not being present in Ultima VII is altered, and they are back in their respective strongholds.
