Ultima VII Part Two
Location: Monitor

Edmund is the probable name of the Serpent Islander and Monitorian knight who was the husband of Harnna and the father of Cantra in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

At the time of the Avatar's arrival on Serpent Isle, Edmund had been missing for several weeks.[1] While some knights reportedly held out hope that he might still be alive, both his daughter Cantra and his wife Harnna were convinced that he had perished and believed that he had likely fallen victim to a goblin raid.[2][3] The champion of Britannia, while touring the catacombs, may have met Harnna as she mourned over her husband's empty grave site, which consisted of a monument whose epitaph read: "Edmund, Archer par Excellence."

Speaking to Harnna, the hero would learn that she considered her late husband to have exemplified a type of courage seldom seen in her fellow Monitorians, noting that he fought, not for personal glory and renown, but rather out of compassionate love for his family. Cantra, being young and eager to prove herself worthy of knighthood, spoke less to the nuances of her father's character, but she nevertheless seemed quite devoted to his memory, vowing to slay a dozen goblins in his name upon becoming a knight.[2][3]

Eventually, should the Avatar manage to uncover evidence that Marsten, Lord of Monitor, and his treasurer Spektor were complicit in a goblin plot, the hero would be able to discern Edmund's ultimate fate. Spektor would reveal that he and his co-conspirator had embezzled funds from Monitor's treasury to fund the creation of an experimental weapon and that Cantra's father had stumbled upon the secret place where this weapon was hidden. Fearing that Marsten would kill him should they be discovered, Spektor slew Edmund to conceal their crime. Should the champion of the Virtues investigate further, speaking to Spektor's lover, Lucilla,[4] the hero would be able to uncover the location where Edmund's body lay and could bring word to Harnna of what had truly befallen her spouse.[5]

Lore[edit]

I love thee, father. I hope thou dost kill more than thy share of goblins. Come home soon. ~~ Cantra
I then asked him if he had seen any strangers in town recently. He scratched his head and said he hadn't noticed, but he'd been busy preparing the memorial for a man who had recently disappeared and was presumed dead. "His widow is the town healer," he said. "She's taking it quite hard. She's often in the crypts, mourning for him." "How very sad," I said, then thanked him for his time and left.

Trivia[edit]

  • Edmund is one of the few Monitorian knights whose Command is unknown.
  • Edmund's death happened a few days before Thoxa visited Monitor, as everyone was getting ready for a memorial service. This does help to further define the time frame of Thoxa's travels.
