The dungeon guardians are found in the NES-Port of Ultima V.

They are statues that stand at the entrance of each dungeon and only allow usage of the ladder down after the correct word of power is given. This differs from the original release of Ultima V, where the word of power actually removed a physical obstacle that was blocking the entrance to the dungeon.
The same portrait was also used for representing the shrines.
