Devra is a Serpent Islander who runs the Inn of the Sleeping Bull with her son Argus.

Description[edit]

Devra first came to the Sleeping Bull as a young woman when she was hired by the owner, Donal, as a cook. A romance soon budded between her and Donal's son, Angus, and after a time the two were wed, with Devra consenting to the union with the belief that the wanderlust and unpredictability of Donal's father, Silverpate, had not been passed to his descendants. In time, Devra and Angus inherited the inn and had two children together: Argus and Wilfred.[1]

When the two sons came of age, both seemingly upset their parents' plans to bequeath the Sleeping Bull to them. Argus left the inn to become a Monitorian knight; Wilfred, who was subjected to a strict upbringing in his brother's absence, eventually followed suit.[2] Devra and Angus ran the inn on their own until Angus' sudden disappearance in the wake of a visit to the inn by Batlin and his entourage. A week following the incident, Devra contacted her two children and bade them return. Argus did so immediately, taking charge of his father's duties as innkeeper,[3] and Wilfred arrived some time later, bent upon finding whomever it was who was responsible for what he deemed to be his father murder.[4]

When the Avatar arrived at the Inn of the Sleeping Bull, some six months later,[3] the mystery as to Angus' whereabouts remained unsolved. While Devra would relate what she could regarding the night of her husband's disappearance, possibly leading the hero to uncover the secret passages and magical devices that lay hidden in the inn's cellar, Angus' fate would ultimately remain unknown. The only matter in which the Avatar would prove capable of assisting, in fact, would prove to be a far more minor and mundane affair; the hero had the opportunity to return to the woman a pair of slippers which had been exchanged for a pair of swamp boots in the midst of the teleport storm that scattered the Avatar's party and their possessions upon making landfall on Serpent Isle.[5]

Whatever befell Angus, Devra would not endure long in his absence. Following the catastrophic release of the Banes of Chaos, she and Argus met their deaths in the resulting disaster, leaving young Wilfred as the only survivor of their family.

Lore[edit]

I arrived in the evening hours. In the tavern room a sweet looking woman was serving food and drink. I gave her my name and asked for a glass of ale and something to eat. She replied that her name was Devra. At that moment I heard someone bellowing in anger at "that blasted fool, Theronl " Devra wrung her hands and apologized for the uproar.

Trivia[edit]

  • In addition to selling food and drink, Devra also works as a versatile moneychanger, dealing in Monetari, Guilders, Filari, gold coins, gold nuggets, gems, and jewelry. She charges the lowest rate for this service of any who offer it on Serpent Isle, asking only 2% of the exchanged total in payment. (For more information, see: Serpent Isle exchange rate)
  • Devra has a soft heart and proves willing to let travelers such as Kane stay at the Sleeping Bull even when they have insufficient funds to do so.[6] However, given the recent loss of the inn's help, she is unable to extend this charity to the Avatar should the hero be unable to afford a room.[7]
