Transcript: David

David and his family are the lighthousekeepers of Greyhaven, located south of Trinsic, during the events of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

After getting a hint from the bard Scally in Buccaneer's Den, the Avatar visited Greyhaven to ask David about his invention, the sextant. David was willing to give it the Avatar, after getting some praise for the invention, feeling that the hero had more use for it.[1]

David otherwise proved quiet, and was somewhat annoyed with his wife Charlotte's positive outlook on the regime imposed by Blackthorn.

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

In Ultima V: Lazarus, David provided little useful information to the Avatar at first, insulting the hero for asking even the most basic questions.[2] It was only after the hero learned about the sextant from the bard Scally in Buccaneer's Den[3] that the crotchety old man opened up to the hero, lovingly telling the Avatar all about his invention. He would eventually give it to the hero, saying he had little use for it now that he was land bound. Bidney of Buccaneer's Den further credited David with inventing the grapple, which he used on his luckless mountain climbing expedition.[4]

David would also prove integral in helping to lift the blockade of Serpent's Hold. At the behest of Hettar,[5] the Avatar could speak to David about finding a boat to supply the besieged Isle of Deeds. David told the hero that previously Sir Arbuthnot and Kenneth had been using a skiff to supply the island, but after an accident that lost the skiff and left Kenneth with a broken leg, the two had been forced to abandon this. David gave the Avatar a map of the smuggling route to Serpent's Hold, and told the hero to seek out Lord Dalgrin of Buccaneer's Den to sail the route.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

In The Ultima 6 Project, the Avatar met David, who was now living in retirement, during the siege of Trinsic. The old man did remember the Avatar, but felt that right then it wasn't the time for talk, although he was willing to help in the plan to break the siege. The scheme reminded him of the the Avatar's cunning plan to supply Serpent's Hold with supplies through Lord Blackthorn’s blockade in Ultima V: Lazarus.

After the siege was broken, David was willing to talk about the past. He revealed that he had left his now ex-wife Charlotte after the collapse of Blackthorn's regime when she became increasingly fanatical about her absolute devotion of the Oppression and couldn't get over its collapse. David had left his post at Greyhaven and took his son Anthony along to protect him from his mother's mania. Charlotte also had lost all custody of their son at the courts and so David managed to raise Anthony to a honorable man, while his ex-wife became a recluse on Verity Isle.
