Darrel Hawson is one of the main protagonists of Lynn Abbey's The Forge of Virtue and The Temper of Wisdom.

Dramatis Personae[edit]

Younger son of Lord Ironhawk. Prone to mischief and his own worst enemy. His nickname, Squirt, refers not to his size, but to his ability to wiggle out of trouble. Ignored and englected except when he's done something wrong, he idolizes his brother Jordan who is, in almost every respect, his opposite. No one invited him to join the search for Balthan. He needed uncanny luck to catch up with the others--but Darrel has always had uncanny luck.

Biography[edit]

The youngest son of Erwald Ironhawk and Lady Barbara, and brother to Jordan, Darrel has darker hair that he inherited from his father.

Since he would not inherit Hawksnest, Lord Erwald attempted to train Darrel at trade.. He began bringing his son on seasonal trips with him to Trinsic when he was five. After the first, disasterous trip, he began bringing along extra guards whose sole purpose was to restrain the younger son.

Darrel has always been high strung and unable to concentrate, but during his chance meeting with the wizard Annon he became fascinated with magic. He also found it in himself to be able to remember things by focusing hard, and can concentrate now, although only when trying.

The Forge of Virtue[edit]

When Lord Ironhawn found his heir has disappeared from Hawksnest, along with his ward Althea, Darrel sneaked away in hopes of catching up. His luck set him in a wagon owned by Colin the Steady, which got him out of the estate and near the border. There, he met the ranger Shamino, who led him to his companions.

During the events of the novel, Darrel was charmed by the wizard Annon, which for the first time cleared his furiously racing mind. He was also the only one unaffected by the strange miasma that overcame the minds of those in Britain, and was able to pass Balthan's mystical traps.
