Compassion is one of the Eight Virtues of Britannia.

Description[edit]

Compassion, founded on the principle of Love, is non-judgmental empathy for one's fellow creatures. It is the quality of empathy, of recognizing and sharing the feelings of others. In the capital of Britain, the bards headquartered in this town of Compassion put their emphasis on hospitality – and indeed their devotion to this particular virtue has enabled them to hone their already legendary skills even further – often giving musical numbers free of charge.

The Shrine of Compassion is situated south of Lock Lake, near the village of Cove.

Compassion through the Ages[edit]

Various messages throughout the ages, given by the shrine or the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, show how Compassion does apply to the lives of people.

Ultima IV[edit]

Meditating at the Shrine of Compassion will give these insights:

  • "Kill not the non-evil beasts of the land, and do not attack the fair people!"
  • "Give of thy purse to those who beg and thy deed shall not be forgotten!"

Ultima V[edit]

Quest form the shrine: "'Tis now thy sacred Quest to go unto the Codex and learn of the heart of a cruel soul!"

Answer from the Codex: "Only a detested life owes its pleasures to another's pain."

Ultima VI[edit]

Wisdom of the shrine: "No beast so fierce but shows some touch of pity. Sweet mercy is nobility's true badge."

Blackthorn's Law[edit]

During Blackthorn's tyranny, Compassion was twisted and turned into a draconian law: "Thou shalt help those in need, or thou shalt suffer the same need."

Lore[edit]

Compassion.gif
Compassion is nonjudgmental empathy for one's fellow creatures.
Compassion is the quality of empathy, of recognizing and sharing the feelings of others.
He who lives without compassion dies loveless. Compassion is the child's awe at the natural world and his love for all who live in it. Compassion for others reflects the Love in one's soul. It requires strength to hold Compassion, for under duress, it is quick to flee. In testing your will to aid others, Compassion shall grow in your spirit like a wildfire.
– from Journal (Ultima IX)

Trivia[edit]

  • Compassion is the only virtue that has two entirely different symbols; sometimes it is a rose and other times it is a heart. The rose is connected with the Brotherhood of the Rose, while the heart is a more general symbol of good intentions. This inconsistency is a bit baffling, considering all the other virtues have codified symbols in the lore.
