Location: Verity Isle

Charlotte is the wife of David of Greyhaven during the time of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

The Avatar spoke with her and learned that she had made the ethics of Blackthorn the center of her life, being completely in favor of them. She especially liked the first one, in which the cutting off of tongues for lying was ordered. If the Avatar disagreed with her, she flew into a rage and left.[1]

As told by her son Anthony, she was forcing her beliefs on him as well.

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Charlotte described herself as an amateur philosopher, looking at the Virtues of the Avatar and how they corresponded to the Ethics of Blackthorn. Even though there were only eight Virtues in total, she felt there was a lifetime of philosophical discussion contained within them, but was displeased with Lord British’s lax attitude in enforcing them, feeling with Lord British's disappearance those who resisted his rightful successor disrespected the liege's legacy. She felt that Blackthorn's decree that those who lie should lose their tongue was proper because it would prevent people from being hurt by the words of liars and thieves. Should the Avatar disagree with her interpretation of Blackthorn's Ethic of Honesty, she would denounce the hero as a heretic, refusing to ever again speak to the Avatar if the hero did not apologize for the offense.[2]

Charlotte told the Avatar how she watched the lighthouse during the day, kept the area clean, and tried to stop her son Anthony from pestering the guests Kenneth and Sir Arbuthnot. She felt Sir Arbuthnot was somewhat withdrawn and unfriendly, and could not understand why her husband took the man in. She was perplexed by why the knight had been out exploring the rocks of the Cape of Heroes with Lord Kenneth at night, and thought it was fortunate that Kenneth had only broken his leg. On the other hand, she was happy to have the court musician visiting, feeling that he would be a good influence upon her son. The lighthouse keeper was much in love with her husband David, and felt that even though their relationship was strained by their differing schedules, they were happy.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

In the The Ultima 6 Project, her devotion to the Oppression became a mania after its collapse. She could not accept that Blackthorn's regime was gone. It came to the point that her husband David had left her, and took their son Anthony with him to protect the boy. Charlotte had also lost all custody rights at the courts in the process. She had at one point tried to kidnap young Anthony from Greyhaven while David was working, but David had seen his wife and stopped her, thus forcing David and his son to move to Trinsic where others could watch out for Charlotte. Thus, she retreated to Verity Isle, becoming a bitter recluse.

The Avatar found her there, living as a hermit in a cabin the forest, surrounded by books about the ethics system of Blackthorn. She recognized the Avatar, and reacted with hostility to the hero's presence, whom she blamed for the collapse of the Oppression. Charlotte told the hero that even though the followers of Blackthorn’s Ethics were now few, they still held out hope of the coming of the true Avatar, who would fight for the Ethics. She felt the hero had deceived David, and had turned her son and husband against her, and that no true hero could commit such a heinous act. If the Avatar had met Anthony, Charlotte was relieved that her son was healthy and had continued his harpsichord lessons, but when told he had become a paladin with the city, the woman went into a fit, accusing the hero of corrupting her son.

So bad was her reputation, that Charlotte in New Magincia was very quick and harsh to correct, that she had no association at all with her.[Clarification needed]
