Captain Elad is a sailor in Buccaneer's Den in Ultima VI.

Description[edit]

The former captain of the 'Theodosia Marie', his ship was lost off the coast of Bordermarch when a great earthquake struck the island and sank it beneath the waves. The resulting whirlpool brought down his ship, and only the former captain and a few of his shipmates were able to escape the maelstrom. The Avatar met Captain Elad a broken man at The Fallen Virgin tavern, so scarred by these past events that he was determined to finally live a life of virtue, starting with abstaining from alcohol. This vow had proven difficult, and Elad often stared forlornly at the mugs of ale downed by the other patrons, with the Avatar occasionally catching the captain cheating out of the corner of his eye. He seemed determined to become a more honest person after his misfortune, so he offered to pay the Avatar for the mantra of honesty, so he could pray at the Shrine of Honesty.[1]

Captain Elad claimed that Captain Johne had been captured by Gargoyles and dragged to the Underworld.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, Captain Elad admitted that before he lost his ship, his only interest in Moonglow had been Fraiser's Folly, the island's famous ale. Now that he was trying to live a life of virtue, he interested in the Mantra of Honesty and not the ale. Asked about the Underworld, he told the hero that Captain Johne had been obsessed with the Gargoyles, and was likely getting more than his fill since entering their domain.

Trivia[edit]

  • Captain Elad's counterpart in reality is Dale Flatt, a friend of Richard Garriott and caretaker of the Ultima creator's properties in Austin, Texas. Flatt also appears in Ultima VII as Moonglow healer Elad, and his wife, Kathy, served as the inspiration for the Avatar's companion, Katrina.[2]
