Boots is the chief cook in Castle Britannia during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Boots was a sweet and grandmotherly old woman who personally saw to Lord British's meals during her time in his employ. Following such personalities as Andre, Cookie, Le Chef, Margaret, Stephen and Maldric as a part of the castle's dining staff, Boots crafted the meals she prepared from both her own recipes and from dishes imported from the king's home world of Earth – presenting such unique meals as "Eggs British" to the sovereign.[1] Her preparations of roast beef and assorted pastries were apparently also favorites, and were available for free in the kitchen should the Avatar ask.[2]

At the time, Boots' family comprised a majority of the castle staff, with her husband Bennie serving as head butler[3] and her children, Charles and Nell acting as a valet and chambermaid. Due in part, no doubt, to Bennie's increased forgetfulness with age, however, Boots and her spouse were destined to retire within a year of the Avatar's adventures in Ultima VII, with her daughter eventually taking her place as head of the kitchen.[4] This span of time also saw the coming of the elderly couple's first grandson by Nell, who married her sweetheart Carrocio in a grand ceremony within the castle several months prior to the birth.

In Ultima Underworld II, Boots was out on an excursion to Paws with the Royal Nursey's children and Sherry the Mouse, allowing her to escape imprisonment during the Guardian's assault on Castle Britannia.

Trivia[edit]

  • Due to Bennie's failure to buy sufficient meat, Boots was willing to pay five gold coins for each shank of mutton the Avatar could bring her – a price which would return a two-gold-profit if the hero bought from the nearby slaughterer, Morfin.[5]
  • Egg's British is likely a renamed variation on Eggs Benedict – which consists of poached eggs on English muffins, topped with meat and Hollandaise sauce.
