Blog is a great troll who makes his home beneath the Pits of Carnage. He appears in Ultima Underworld II.

Description[edit]

Blog was a simple individual who took great delight in collecting rocks and devising games around them. His favorite of these games was "White-Rock Black-Rock" which involved players taking turns selecting rocks until one either picked a white rock and won or picked a black rock and lost. Despite his best efforts to teach the intricacies of White-Rock Black-Rock to the local fauna, however, the rats and spiders of the pits proved unreceptive players, so Blog beat them to death and ate them. (He claimed their taste was far superior to that of rocks.)

Prior to the Avatar's arrival in the Pits of Carnage, Blog was assaulted by a troop of men from the penal colony above, led by Dorstag. The troll slaughtered the entire company save their leader, whose face was deeply scarred in the resulting battle. If the Avatar was able to find Blog's home and befriend him (either by graciously losing a few rounds of White-Rock Black-Rock or by presenting the troll with a marvelous new grey rock) Blog would assist the hero in retrieving a blackrock gem from Dorstag's possession, bullying the fighter into complying with his new friend's wishes.[1][2]

The Avatar could later encounter Blog in the purple zone of the Ethereal Void, where the gentle troll dreamed of being intelligent enough to always pick the white rock in his games and used a number of multisyllabic words. He would speak at length about his adventures on the strange plane, offering the hero a number of clues as to how to navigate its perils.[1]

Lore[edit]

A friendly great troll named Blog makes his home there too, the same troll who once almost killed Dorstag. I suspect that Blog might prove a useful ally against Dorstag, if one ever had the need.

Trivia[edit]

  • Should the Avatar continually win at White-Rock Black-Rock, Blog's mood will worsen.
  • Dr. Cat (David Shapiro), who designed Blog, has created a simplified variant of White-Rock Black-Rock in which the black rock is replaced by an empty hand, streamlining the game even further and cutting down on playset costs.[3]
  • Should Blog ally with the Avatar to wrest the blackrock gem from Dorstag, the troll will relocate to the upper levels of the pits, and will add his own grafitto to the walls of the "Hall of Losers."
