Transcript: Bidney

Bidney is a drunk pirate found in Buccaneer's Den in Ultima V.

Description[edit]

The Avatar found dialogue with him very difficult, as he was constantly drunk and spoke incoherently. However, at Tierra’s suggestion, the hero asked Bidney about his grapple. Bidney revealed that mountain climbing had become too dangerous for him, so he'd given his equipment to Lord Michael of Empath Abbey and became a pirate. Then finally, overcome by alcohol, he fell asleep on the spot.[1]

With this information in hand, the Avatar managed to get the grapple from Lord Michael for mountain climbing.

His seafaring days now long over, in Ultima V: Lazarus Bidney was in a constant drunken stuporous state, serving Lord Dalgrin as the muscle for his various enterprises.[2]

The pitiful drunk told the hero that he had once been a great sailor, and had heard rumors of ship that flew, the magic carpet, so had sought out the highest mountain in Britannia figuring it must be there. Knowing little of mountains, his friends in the expedition had perished, and only he returned. After speaking with Tierra,[3] Bidney revealed that he had used a grapple invented by David to try to scale the peak, and had given it to Lord Michael of Empath Abbey after his expedition failed. He had no idea how a flying ship might work, only magic must be involved which was a subject he knew little about. Scally the bard had tried to weave Bidney's tale into his songs, but the sailor had objected to this and broken his lute.[4] The old drunk thought Lord Dalgrin was a great man, and a fair man, and was probably more just than Blackthorn, who he had no love for.

Bidney admitted he helped kidnap Enlor of Cove’s apprentice and send the man to Waveguide for Lord Dalgrin.

In The Ultima 6 Project, a tombstone in Empath Abbey reads, "Cap'n Bidney sailed the seas - 'Til he grew old 'n flabby - He gave it up to go and sup - The wine at Empath Abbey. - First a pirate, then a monk - But ever, always, roaring drunk."
