Beverlea is the owner of a used-goods shop known as the House of Items in Paws in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Beverlea claimed lofty goals in running the House of Items, stating that she hoped that such an establishment was heartening to those not able to afford better goods, and that the energy she poured into the store helped keep up her spirits. While outwardly appearing an empathetic and grandmotherly woman, Beverlea had something of a passive-aggressive streak when it came to non-paying browsers at her store, and could be pressed into losing her patience if it was revealed that the Avatar had no money at the time. Many of her items for sale also had stories of interest behind them, and she claimed to have such artifacts as the cradle that rocked Gorn the barbarian as a child, a rocking-horse owned by the renowned equestrienne Diane, a bell used in Yew's high court, and a sextant sold by the then famous Owen of Minoc.[1]

Due to her ailing eyesight, Beverlea relied on the honesty of her customers in dealing her goods, and could thus be easily hoodwinked by those with unscrupulous aims. When the Avatar learned that Beverlea was in possession of Nicodemus' hourglass which was necessary to dismantle the Sphere Generator, the hero was able to make the choice as to whether to obtain it by virtuous or unvirtuous means.[2]

Trivia[edit]

  • Gorn’s extra-planar origins calls into question the authenticity of the cradle Beverlea sells.
  • Beverlea will mention when describing the sextant that the sailor who sold it to her had recently suffered a "harrowing experience" on the waters, providing a subtle hint as to the unsoundness of Owen's craftsmanship.[1]
