Bernhard is a miller in Minoc in Ultima V: Lazarus.

Having been born with strangely white eyes, in his youth Bernhard had been mocked for their colour, and had grown increasingly self-conscious about them. In his youth he had even sought to have them changed by a local mage, but was unable to afford his high price, so had learned to accept his eyes the way they were. He was happy with the city of Minoc and his career, but mentioned he had heard stories about a strange blight effecting crops throughout the land from some of the farmers which he bought his grain. [1]

The miller was quick to tell the Avatar that even though his job was not as beautiful as his wife Lyvia's, who worked as a silversmith and locksmith at the Artisan's Hall, it was good work and he was proud of what he did. Bernhard was also willing to share the story of how he first fell in love with his wife, as they were forced to hide together amongst some rocks while fleeing a group of headless.

At the insistence of the Oppression, Bernhard had stopped selling flour at discount prices to Fiona at the Poor House in an attempt to squeeze the Word of Power from her. Bernhard, fearing the Oppression's wrath complied. If the Avatar freed Rew and allowed Fiona and her daughter to escape,[2][3] Bernhard would once again supply cheap flour to Minoc's poor.
