This article is about a character from Ultima VII. For the Ultima VI character, see Ben (U6).

Ben is a woodcutter in Yew during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

The latest in a proud ten-generation woodcutting tradition, Ben knew little of the affairs of greater Britannia, focusing mainly on the day to day realities of his work. Only passingly familiar with the people of Yew and with William the sawyer, Ben spent most of his life immersed in the trees of the Deep Forest.[1]

Should the Avatar petition him with Salamon's request that he cease logging the silverleaf tree, Ben would prove instantly sympathetic to the emps’ cause, not wishing to bring harm to the gentle creatures which dwelt within that particular species.[2] Such a decision had a lasting impact on the dining culture of the kingdom, however, as the primary reason silverleaf was harvested was to create a dish from its pulped roots. Should Ben sign a contact binding him to cease the cutting of such trees, stocks of the prized meal would plummet, causing it to become widely unavailable in most eateries, and grossly expensive where it could be found.

Lore[edit]

Still others live in the forest because their work has brought them here. The logger, whose family has lived in the forest for at least as long as the monastery has been here, has a near-endless supply of trees, in addition to having access to the river necessary to move his wood to Minoc.

Trivia[edit]

  • Given Ben's familial tradition of logging in the area, there exists the possibility that he may be the descendant of "Big Ben" from Ultima VI.
