Aurvidlem is a winged gargoyle running a Vesper provisions shop in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Aurvidlem's demeanor was one of extreme disillusionment, feeling hopeless in the face of his people's persecution in the racially segregated settlement. Recognizing the Avatar immediately when spoken to, the despairing merchant made it clear he felt the racial conflict in Vesper was intractable, stating that the humans would forever anticipate Gargish violence, and that while the bigoted human Vesperians probably deserved as much, he hoped his people to be above such brutality.

Not having many friends among the Gargish community, Aurvidlem could speak little as to the affairs of the west bank, bitterly explaining how Ansikart had won out as leader against him, and lamenting the decline of the once intelligent Wis-Sur into insanity.

Trivia[edit]

  • Aurvidlem translates to "gold seer" or perhaps "gold seeker" in Gargish. This meshes well with earlier drafts of the character, which state that he would become more open and friendly once the player bought sufficient quantities of goods from him.[2]
  • In the Super Nintendo port of Ultima VII, Aurvidlem is not portrayed as despondent, merely concerned over the well-being of his friend, Lap-Lem. He also has an assistant in this version of the game, known as Slaskow.[3]
  • The "jar" that he sells actually is a pitcher.
