Location: Lycaeum
Description: mage, former Oppression member

Arkandor is a mage at the Lycaeum in Ultima V: Lazarus.

Arkandor both desired and feared meeting the Avatar, for he knew the hero would have no love for his former existence as a mage with the Oppression, but hoped to redeem himself with his newfound understanding of Truth. He noted that the inner circle of the Oppression had been hand picked for their brutality and lack of caring for human life.[1]

Arkandor was born in Trinsic, his father a soldier in the guard and his mother a healer. His father wished his son to follow in his footsteps and become a city guard, but Arkandor found more pleasure in books than the training ground. In defiance of his father's wishes, he stowed away on a ship to Moonglow where he found a competent teacher and began to study magic. When he had learned all he could he began to travel in search of other means of power. He was eventually taken on by Elistaria, where he became adept in death spells and summoning daemons. After serving in Blackthorn's court for a number of years, something shook him to his senses and he fled to the Lycaeum, rejecting the Oppression and avowing his powers to the fight against the Shadowlords.

Arkandor could supply the former Oppression password for Daem, Maltari.[2]

Furious at the betrayal of her former student, Elistaria could demand the head of Arkandor, which the Avatar could supply after removing it personally.[3]

Trivia[edit]

  • Arkandor was named for Arkandor Dragon of the Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter. This was a token of thanks by dialogue writer Shadow of Light Dragon, as Arkandor was the one who tipped her off that Lazarus was looking for writers. The NPC's description and backstory was created with input from his real world counterpart.
