Conversation[edit]

Lady British: "Go to Master Barren in Skara Brae. He is a great teacher. They say he even taught the First Avatar the ways of Spirituality. Meanwhile, I will have the Rangers Guild research this Mimmoro."

You: "I will seek him out. Farewell."

...

Master Barren: "Ah! So, the rumors were true. They said a Stranger has just arrived here by Moongate. Well, what brings you to Orcas Isle and the fair town of Skara Brae?"

You: "What's a Moongate?" (Story)

Master Barren: "A Moongate is a magical door that moves you a great distance in an instant. Used to be that they opened and closed with the phases of the moons, but since The Weep came they've been stuck open."

You: "Hmm, useful."

You: "Lady British sent me to learn about Virtue." (Advance Quest)

Master Barren: "Mastering the Eight Virtues will strengthen your body, mind and soul against even the darkest foe. Tell me, how do you think you learn Virtue?"

(You have three choices:)

  • "By learning the sound of one hand clapping?"
  • "By emptying my cup of tea?"
  • "By learning the value of a drop of water?"

Master Barren: "Hah! Many students come to me spouting such nonsense. The only way to learn the Virtues is through action! You must get out there and live the Virtues. Not stay here and think about them."

You: "Any suggestions on how to get started?"

Master Barren: "Visit the Virtue Shrines. You can learn all sorts about yourself by meditating at their alters. Go to the Spirituality Shrine just out of town and you'll see what I mean."

You: "On my way." (Advance Quest)

...

(When you reach the Shrine of Spirituality, the Gypsy tells you how Shrines function and advances the quest.)

...

Master Barren: "You look much wiser from your travels, Stranger. Well, I've got a spot of practical Spirituality for you now. Ever wonder what happens after you die?"

(You have three choices:)

  • "I don't know." (+Spirituality)
  • "Nothing, you're dead and that's it." (+Spirituality)
  • "There's an afterlife." (+Spirituality)

Master Barren: "A lot of folks feel the same. Thing is, how do you explain ghosts? It would be good for you to talk to one. Issac, in the Inn of the Spirits, is usually good for a chat. Run along and see him."

You: "Wish me luck." (Advance Quest)

...

Tyrone: "You there! You're one of them Earth-folk aren't you? Glad you are here. This bloody ghost is upset and scaring my customers off. He won't listen to a word I say, but perhaps you can soothe him."

(You have two options:) You: "What did you think I was here for?"

Tyrone: "Yes. Well, get on with it then. Isaac can't be calmed quick enough if you ask me."

You: "Of course."

(or)

You: "Really?! And I just thought Master barren was crazy..."

Tyrone: "You'd be the crazy one if you don't believe in ghosts. See for yourself."

You: "I shall, indeed."

...

Isaac: "Art thou the one? Hast thou come to ease their torment?"

You: "I... er... heedeth thee."

Isaac: "The dead cry out! Thy ears are deaf to the souls of Barrowgrove, but each moonrise I hear their screams. A foul necromancer hath enslaved my brothers in death."

(text needed)

...

Isaac: "The necromancer hath stopped... for now. I thank thee, Stranger, for helping the dead sleep as they should. Gold to reward thee, I have none. Yet some say knowledge is a jewel beyond price...:

You: "Tell me more."

Isaac: "Then know thee this; The Black Weep is a work of daemon magic and necromancy. It is an infection of the soul... not the body. As it kills the soul, the body rots and dies."

You: "How does it work?" (Story)

Isaac: "Diseases of the soul are spead through ideas... through hate, fear and lies. More than this, I know not."

You: "Can it be stopped?" (Advance Quest)

Isaac: "I know not the ways of Magic. Get thee to a Mage if thou seekest answers."

You: "I'll tell Master Barren first."

...

Master Barren: "Well that took longer than I was expecting. You must have been chatting with that ghost for quite some time. What did you learn from Isaac?"

You: "The Black Weep is a necromantic soul plague." (Advance Quest)

Master Barren: "The plague is magical? That would explain a few things. A soul plague, eh? Those daemons are bloody clever... why curse the body when the spirit is just as vulnerable. Alas, that falls outside my expertise."

You: "I need to speak to a Mage about this." (Complete Quest)

Master Barren: "Of course! This might just be the news that allows us to beat The Black Weep. Go to Mariah of the Mages Guild in Britain. There is no one that knows magic better than she."

You: "Farewell."

(You are then given the quest The Daemon's Right Hand.)

Trivia[edit]

  • If you killed Roric prior to speaking with Isaac, the text is instead:

You: Are you talking about Roric? I thought I stopped him." (Advance Quest)
And you can skip the trip to Barrowgrove.
